Good Oral Health: Something to Smile About

Did you know that seeing your dentist regularly does more than keep your pearly whites clean and sparkly? Research shows that over 125 illnesses can be identified in the mouth through a dental exam, including osteoporosis, bulimia, diabetes, and oral cancer.

Periodontal (gum) disease can also trigger the body’s inflammation response and adversely affect the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and brain. Studies strongly suggest that periodontal disease has the ability to disrupt blood sugar levels which explains why 95% of Americans who have diabetes also have periodontal disease.

Another fact that may surprise you even more, is 44% of LSS employees that are Delta Dental members do not go for their free preventive screenings! They are paying for the insurance, but they are not using this free benefit!

Be proactive and protect your oral health and overall health with the following suggestions:

  • Brush at least twice a day (morning and evening) with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss gently once a day
  • Drink fluoridated water
  • Eat wisely and limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol
  • Remember to visit your dentist and if you are a member, take advantage of Delta Dental’s free cleanings twice a year!
