LSS State of the Union Address

Greetings LSS Family,

Thank you all for the incredible strides we made financially in 2018. While not across the finish line yet, we are headed in the right direction. For the first time in three years we were very close to meeting our Operating Budget. A large part of our success is related to the reorganization and process improvements facilitated by Gary Anderson’s implementation of a larger team model along with Paul Ogier’s leadership oversight of our Finances.  Most notably is the Operations and Financial Performance Team that includes several functional areas, teams, and leaders from across LSS.  We would not have achieved the financial strides we made without everyone’s help. THANK YOU!

We are blessed to begin another year led by our Christian Mission – Older Adults Living Life to the Fullest (based on John 10:10) – and our Christian Core Values – Faith Inspired, People First, Service Excellence, Responsible Stewardship, and Generous Hearts. Our values are the foundation of everything we do and we strive to keep them at the forefront of every decision, initiative, task, and interaction. This is what makes Lutheran Senior Services special for our residents and our employees. Our Christian Core Values are a key part of our 2019 theme “Building a Foundation for Workplace Excellence.”

For several years we’ve been focused on reducing turnover. As we dig further into this issue, we’re learning that we must look at employment holistically. This brings us to Workforce Excellence. We will be focused on building LSS as the employer of choice by implementing people, systems, programs, and processes that promote the desire to be part of a mission greater than ourselves, while providing the basic needs of the workforce so they have the ability to work here, provide for their families, better themselves, and feel good about their contributions to the mission and making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

This objective is especially exciting as it is a concentrated effort on our people. When we talk about our Christian Core Values, we have to remember that they apply not only to how we serve our residents, guests, and clients but to us internally as well. We want to better serve all of you and build on that reputation to improve our recruiting of new LSS employees.

Our second objective will focus on enhancing LSS Assisted Living performance. In 2018, we evaluated our practices in this area. We are building on this work in 2019 by implementing program changes in Assisted Living while ensuring seamless transitions for our residents and families.

We trimmed our objectives this year so we can focus on a concentrated effort to move the needle in these two areas. You’ll continue to hear from LSS leadership through the quarterly Finance and Operation Updates so you can be informed about how we are tracking on meeting our objectives.

I am honored to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated team across all our communities and service lines. Thank you for all you do for LSS, your fellow employees, and our residents, guests, and clients.
